Why cultural fit matters for interims too
Most companies hire interims based on technical credentials (sector experience, track record of results, strategic capability etc.) Of course these matter, but I've seen industry peers fail in interim roles because nobody had paid attention to cultural fit.
In these circumstances it tends to be an attitude of “why does cultural alignment matter when someone's only there for six to twelve months?” when in fact it makes the biggest difference to success or failure. My best interim assignments have been where there's enough cultural alignment that I can work effectively within your system, but different enough that I can challenge comfortable assumptions.
If we’re discussing working together we both need to consider:
· Pace of working
· Expected communication styles
· How decisions are made
· Tolerance for implementing difficult decisions
